A great way to harvest grey water is with the ecoCare Grey Waste Water Diverter System; this compact (1/3sqm) semi-automatic system works by collecting water from a household’s shower, bath, or washing machine. When the waste water is diverted into the system the pump is activated pumping the grey water to the garden. Complying to government regulations the system will dump residual grey water every 24hours.
An average family of four can save between 360 litres and 700 litres of grey water per day for garden use; this would be enough to sustain most domestic gardens while decreasing the need to use mains water.
The ecoCare Grey Waste Water Diverter System meets all regulatory guidelines and is Watermark approved (license number PST20083).
Currently rebates of up to $500 are available in Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia. The rebate scheme for NSW is currently (April 2007) before State Parliament. As rebates schemes can change check with your local council. Rebate forms for each state are included with the ecoCare unit.
Q. How does the ecoCare system work?
By closing a valve, waste water from eg the shower is discharged into the unit. The water level in the tank rises to start the pump. Grey water is discharged to sub-surface irrigation until the water level in the tank decreases to stop the pump. Additionally the pump activates every 24 hours to discharge residual water in accordance with government regulations.\
Q. What size is the unit?
Overall, including external plumbing pipe work the unit is 500mm x 400mm x 500mm high.
with an additional 200mm clearance above the unit required to be able to remove the filter sock/basket.
Q. What capacity is the unit?
The tank is simply a container for the pump as waste water is diverted into the unit and immediately discharged. The pump starts when approx 20 litres is in the tank.
Q. What is the ecoCare unit made of?
The tank is made from Food grade polyethylene. The plumbing pipe work is standard 50mm
u-PVC.
Q. What is the pump performance?
The nominal discharge of the pump is 110 litres per minute with no discharge hose. The height of the discharge end of the lilac hose and the length of the lilac discharge hose will affect the rate of discharge. For optimum pump performance minimise the length of lilac hose between the tank and the sub surface distribution pipe. Using all 20 metres of the 25mm lilac hose supplied, the pump discharge is:
Head DischargePer minute
0 metres 60 litres
1 metres 50 litres
2 metres 45 litres
3 metres 35 litres
4 metres 25 litres
5 metres 10 litres
Q. How much power does the pump use?
The pump runs only when waste water discharges into the unit. In an average four person household the pump will run for only 15 minutes a day on average at a cost of less than 2 cents per day (using a domestic tariff of 14.54 cents per kWh).
Q. What happens if the power is turned off?
If the pump does not start the waste water will overflow to sewer through the overflow pipework supplied with the unit. Under Plumbing Regulations the overflow pipework must be connected to sewer during Installation.
Q. Does the ecoCare unit treat the greywater?
Under current government definitions the unit is best described as a pumped diversion system that does not treat the grey water. The unit incorporates a filter sock and basket to remove the larger particles of lint and hair in accordance with Australian Standards.
Q. What maintenance is required?
Periodically clean the filter sock and basket and wipe the probe clean – a process taking just a few minutes. As the types of detergents and soaps used will vary, initially check the filter sock and basket and probe weekly until the frequency of cleaning can be determined.
Q. What soaps and detergents can be used?
Household detergents that are high in sodium are likely to be detrimental to plants and the soil. The levels of phosphorous in detergents may also cause problems depending upon the soil type. Enclosed with each unit is information on commonly used laundry products. For more information
visit www.lanfaxlabs.com.au Thank you to Dr Robert Patterson CPSS, CPAg, FIEAust for this information. Further information relevant to particular flora can be obtained from your local nursery.
Q. How is the grey water distributed to the garden or lawn?
The greywater must be distributed by sub-surface irrigation. The recommended method is through 25mm LDPE with a series of holes punched in it, inside 50mm slotted draincoil. Your reseller will have more information. The use of sprinklers is not recommended. Drip tube or soaker hose is not suitable for use with the ecoCare unit as these are designed for finely filtered and/or treated greywater and will likely block up in a short time.
Q. What happens in wet weather?
To prevent over irrigation in wet weather, waste water can be directed straight to sewer by simply OPENING the gate valve on the unit – a process that takes only a few seconds.
